Shame on Me. Or Shame on You?

One month ago, I was “let go” from my job. Or fired. Or sacked. Or made redundant. Whatever you want to call it, although I feel like each synonym comes with a variable level of shame. Because shame is the first emotion that set in after the initial shock of being told “we’re giving you your notice”.

“You Must Have Known This Was Coming”

Those are the words my Manager uttered to me in response to, I don’t even know what I said to be honest. Well, no I didn’t know it was coming. The last time I got fired was when I was 17 working in a bar and spending too much time in the toilets checking that I was still looking my best. I also was never that good at pouring a pint so there was no love lost and that situation was unlike this one in that I was treated like a human being. When did we lose all sense of humanity when it comes to letting people go? Somewhere up there in “Management” they forget that “we” have bills to pay, mortgages to secure, car loans, upcoming weddings, vacations…

So here is the backstory. I was in this particular full time role for 10 months. It was an interesting 10 months because they dynamics changed significantly when a whole new layer of management was added into the company. I think they were trying to go from “start up” mentality to… “growth” mentality. New targets, new aims, new goals…
